About Timisoara

We found Timisoara in the south-east part of Pannonia Fields (more exactly in the south part of Romanian Western Fields) between the rivers Timis and Bega.

Timisoara “the Fortress on the Timis river”, is the headquarter of the biggest city of the Timis County, from the historical region so called Banat, in the west part of Romania.

The name of the city came from the Timis river (that flows in the south part of Timisoara city), called in Antiquity by the Romans Tibisis or Tibiscus.

The first documentary attestation of the Timisoara city is quite controversial, being placed by historians in 1212 or 1266. In 1175 the Timis County is mentioned in some documents, but without any information about its economical and administration center. The territory known later as Banat with the administration center in “Urbis Morisena” (called Cenad), was conquered by the hungarians.

The territory later known as Banat with its administrative center in "Urbis Morisena" (then Cenad) was conquered by the Hungarians around 1030 and incorporated into the Hungarian kingdom.

Because Timisoara is seated at a strategic point from where much of the Banat Plain could be controlled, both the Timisoara city and the administrative title of Timis Committee became more and more important.

Timisoara received a special stimulus during the reign of King Carol of Anjou, who following his visit in 1307, ordered the construction of a royal palace right here.

During feudal anarchy, he will move the Hungary's capital to Timisoara. The appointment of Iancu of Hunedoara as a Committee of Timis in 1440 marks a special chapter in Timisoara's history.

Iancu de Hunedoara was known throughout the region for his victory in Belgrade over the Ottomans, being considered at that time a defender of Christianity. He turned the city into a permanent military camp and into his home, after he moved here with his family.

Thus, the fortress will remain in the possession of the Corvinesti Dynasty until 1490.

On December 20, 1989, Timisoara was declared the first communist Romanian city.
