Piata Libertatii is considered to be the oldest of Timisoara’s squares.
This site, Liberty Square, is also the original hub from which Timisoara developed itself and the heart of the city nowadays.
Old names of P-ta Libertatii: The Parade Square (in German Parade Platz), Prince Eugen Square (in German Prinz Eugen Platz, in Hunagarian Jenő Herceg tér), the Square of Old City Hall and Liberty Square ( in German Freiheitsplatz, in Hungarian Szabadság tér).
After the Conquer of the city by the Austrian army, the square was once again called Prince Eugen Square.
In 1848 with the outbreak of the Hungarian Revolution, the name of the square changed into the Liberty Square.

Among the locals, the square is also called “The Square of Old City Hall”. The Old City Hall was built in baroque style between 1731- 1734.
Here was also “the Big Bath” the largest public bath of the city, recently discovered by timisoara’s archaeologists, but which is now covered with sand for conservation.
